Project-001 | Karting Cloud Telemetry

“Measure what can be measured, and make measurable what cannot be measured.”. Galileo Galilei’s famous quote drove us in the development of our first project related to one of our biggest passions: motorsport.

There is no other sport where technology is so crucial to ensure the achievement of great performances. While major motorsport series already took advantage of Cloud services to improve racing performances, in karting there is an important gap we aim to close.

A kart driver spends 90% of his time close to his pit crew, to understand how to achieve the best results during the race, but when he gets on the track he is completely alone. Isn’t it ironic? Simultaneously, the pit wall is completely blind to what’s happening on the track.

Measure what can be measured, and make measurable what cannot be measured.

We designed a solution that relies on AWS IoT Cloud services to allow our racing team to gather, visualize and analyze real-time data from the kart, to gain insights faster, make critical decisions and optimize performance down to the smallest detail.

We faced the challenges of creating from scratch an IoT ecosystem of both hardware and services, designed to be resilient and fault-tolerant, and to be able to operate with ultra-low latency in intermittent connectivity situations. We built an edge appliance capable of running in extreme environment conditions, like high temperatures, intense vibrations and dust. We optimized its services to lower the power consumption as much as possible, to make the device as light as possible.
